The South West Devon Constituency came into existence in time for the 1997 general election when Gary Streeter became the MP.
The Constituency is made up in the east, the rural part of the old Totnes constituency and the western part (urban) of the Plymouth Sutton constituency.
In other words, half of the South Hams District Council Wards, quite a few of the Plymouth City Council wards and two of the West Devon wards .
